What is a circulating nurse?

A circulating nurse is a registered nurse who is responsible for coordinating patient care in the operating room. They do not directly assist with the surgery, but instead focus on ensuring that the operating room is fully stocked with supplies and equipment, maintaining a sterile environment, and assisting the surgical team as needed.

Circulating nurses also play a crucial role in ensuring patient safety by verifying the patient's identity, confirming the surgical site, and monitoring the patient throughout the procedure. They are often responsible for documenting the surgical process and assisting with transferring the patient to the recovery room after the surgery is complete.

In addition to their clinical responsibilities, circulating nurses may also serve as advocates for patients, ensuring that their needs and preferences are communicated to the surgical team. They must be skilled at multitasking, quick thinking, and problem-solving, as they need to be able to respond to unexpected situations and emergencies in the operating room.
